The modern welding helmet used today was first introduced in 1937. Most welding helmets include a window covered with a filter called a lens shade, through which the welder can see to work. We were drawn to the mysterious mask aspect of a welding helmet. Masks in various forms have played a crucial historical role in understanding “what it means to be human”. Roman gladiator masks were not only protective but also helped make the wearer more intimidating. Whether sacred, practical or playful we feel masks are magical.
